How does it feel to fail at femininity?
What does destructive internal chatter look like?
What unrealistic standards are Trans Women held to? And how much do they hold themselves to those standards?
‘Dysphorantine’ is a snapshot in time, a single moment that personifies destabilizing forces behind gender dysphoria – and how those forces are heightened during periods of extreme isolation. The viewer is placed at the centre of a surreal scene, between a trans woman and her mirror. This my effort to insert cis-gendered viewers into the perspective of a dysphoric experience, asking them to reflect on their privileges as gender “passing” people. I would like to expand on these works to illustrate our urgent need for mental health and well-being resources within the transgender community.
In the original interactive image, we are invited to interact with the scene and scrutinize our subject, but so too are we studied when we look into the mirror.
